The Story: About a year ago I wanted to experiment with colored pencils. I did a few little drawings here and there, read a halpful book on techniques, but wanted a real challenge. Thus was born the coral reef concept: it would be a large drawing intended to teach me not only to use colored pencils, but also patience. I am used to charcoal, where it is very easy to cover a large area in a short time. Colored pencil is not like that - it is meticulous, layering colors to get just the right color and texture you want. Nearly 60 hours of work went in to this drawing over a span of 13 months. I researched the Great Barrier Reef to get a collection of species that would actually be found in the same general area. It took several hours of research and planning just to come up with the layout.
To read about each species depicted in this drawing, including the colors I used for each, please take a look at my blog under the category "reef."
