The Story: I read an article on narwhals in a recent Smithsonian magazine, and got hooked! I also wanted to try drawing on colored paper. Narwhals are a species of whale that lives in the arctic. Such frigid temperatures have caused the whales to develop more blubber than other species and to lose their dorsal fin in favor of a "ridge." The main characteristic of these whales is their long, unicorn-like horn. Like an elephant, the tusk is actually a tooth. Nearly all males have one, with a rare individual having two, and most females have none. While narwhals are very hard to find and study, they are not endangered. They eat fish and squid, and are hunted by polar bears and orcas. Certain indigenous people of the arctic are allowed to hunt them.
