The Story: At the Rio Grande Zoo, there is a path that goes along a series of ape habitats. First, you encounter the gorillas, then the orangutans, then as you round the bend there is a tall netted area with much more trees. This is where the siamangs live, and they are usually very hard to spot. The siamang is a gibbon, which is one of the "lesser apes" (i.e. not great apes). Native to Malaysia and Sumatra, they live in pairs. Every morning, they climb to the highest trees and let out loud calls, amplified by the inflatable pouch in their throat. They call to their neighbors to signal territories. In all the times I have been to the zoo, I have only witnessed this behavior once, and got a few good reference photos in the process.
