The Story: I had the vision of this drawing for a long time before I actually sat down to begin it. I knew it had to be large, and I had a big sheet of gray matboard in the closet that would work perfectly. I toyed with the poses for while, figuring how best to fit them into a square, but even once I got it set I was reluctant to start. This was just after I had finished my 13-month project in colored pencil, the coral reef, and these zebras would be twice the size! Fortunately, charcoal works much faster than colored pencil, so it "only" took me two months.
